MARCH ’26

Each month, a single teaching bridges philosophy and lived practice.

This month: MARCH ’26

Tapas & Svādhyāya

A Season of Inner Fire

As winter yields to lengthening days, we awaken an inner warmth. March invites us into tapas, the disciplined fire of transformation, and Svādhyāya, the clear light of self-study—two vital forces from the niyamas in Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras.
In yogic wisdom, tapas fuels change through steady heat; Svādhyāya illuminates it with honest reflection. Together, they burn away dullness: tapas ignites commitment, Svādhyāya reveals truth beneath the effort. Practice becomes not just action, but revelation.

Let us review the key Sūtras related with this:

PYS॥2.1॥
tapas-svādhyāya-īśvara-praṇidhānāni kriyā-yogaḥ

These three—tapas, svādhyāya, surrender—form kriya yoga, the yoga of action. Effort aligns with awareness, transforming routine into sacred process.

PYS॥2.32॥
niyamāḥ tapas-svādhyāya-īśvara-praṇidhānāni

Here, Patañjali lists the niyamas as inner observances. Tapas builds purifying heat; svādhyāya deepens through sacred study and self-inquiry.

PYS॥2.44॥
svādhyāyād iṣṭa-devatā-samprayogaḥ

Through svādhyāya, a connection with one’s chosen ideal or guiding principle arises. Study becomes not merely intellectual, but relational and transformative.

PYS॥2.43॥
kāyendriya-siddhir aśuddhi-kṣayāt tapasaḥ

Through tapas, impurities are reduced, leading to mastery over body and senses. The inner fire refines, but only when guided by awareness.

How Inner Fire Feels in Practice

  • Excess tapas: body strains, the ego inflames, and will overrides wisdom.
  • Insufficient tapas: comfort lingers, and transformation does not arise.
  • Balanced tapas: warmth spreads evenly; breath deepens, and clarity emerges without force.

Svādhyāya witnesses this: observing effort without judgment, revealing what truly sustains the practice.

Teaching

True fire simplifies: tapas warms without burning, and svādhyāya sees without distortion. As March stirs renewal, may your practice kindle this steady flame—effort met with insight, discipline refined by understanding.
